Bayern Munich hold off Freiburg in first game without Kompany

Bayern Munich returned to the top of the Bundesliga table thanks to a 3-1 away win at Freiburg on Sunday. It was the champions' first game since manager Vincent Kompany was admitted to hospital after collapsing at the club's training ground, with assistant Aaron Danks in the dugout in his absence. A victory for Borussia Dortmund against Frankfurt on Saturday had knocked Bayern off the summit, but goals from Dayot Upamecano and Serge Gnabry in the first half earned them victory in what turned into a tricky assignment. Midfielder Tom Bischof's own-goal eight minutes from the end set up a nervous finish at the Europa-Park Stadion, before Michael Olise scored in the fifth minute of stoppage time to put the result beyond doubt. Kompany's absence is expected to be weeks rather than days, according to the club's director of sport Max Eberl. The former Manchester City and Belgium defender Kompany remained in a stable condition in hospital and on Friday, and Eberl said "examinations were continuing."
