Atletico Madrid come from behind to beat Athletic Club ahead of Arsenal clash
Atletico Madrid warmed up for Wednesday's Champions League semi-final first leg against Arsenal by coming from behind to beat Athletic Club 3-2 and end a four-game losing run in LaLiga. Alarm bells were ringing for an Atletico side who had lost six of their last eight in all competitions when Aitor Paredes headed the visitors in front in the 23rd minute. But Antoine Griezmann levelled four minutes into the second half and five minutes later Alexander Sorloth put Diego Simeone's side ahead, adding a third in stoppage time before Gorka Guruzeta pulled one back at the death. Victory leaves Atletico two points behind third-placed Valencia , but it is a setback for Athletic's hopes of Europa League football as they stay three points adrift of third-placed Getafe who lost to Barcelona earlier in the day.
Atletico came under early pressure as Jan Oblak made a fine save to deny Guruzeta, but there was nothing the goalkeeper could do when Paredes met Inigo Ruiz de Galarreta's corner with a powerful header to take the lead. Atletico struggled to muster a response before the break but were quickly out of the traps after it, with Griezmann turning in a low cross from Alex Baena . After Oblak did well to deny Yuri Berchiche , Baena was the creator again as Atletico took the lead with a swift counter finished off by Sorloth. Guruzeta saw a shot brush the post as Atletico stayed ahead, padding their lead when Nahuel Molina played a through ball for Sorloth to tuck in - a cushion they would need as Guruzeta headed in for the visitors in the seventh minute of time added on.
